The Republic of Botswana, located in south central Africa between Namibia and Zimbabwe has an area of 600,370 sq. km. and a population of 1.84 million. Capital: Gaborone. The economy is primarily pastoral with a rapidly developing mining industry, of which diamonds, copper and nickel are the chief elements. Meat products and diamonds comprise 85 percent of the exports. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. Mineral extraction, principally diamond mining, dominates economic activity, though ourism is a grwing sector due to the sountry's conservation practices and extensive nature preserves.
