Tahiti, the largest island of the central South Pacific French overseas territory of French Polynesia, has an area of 402 sq. mi. (1,042 sq. km.) and a population of 79,024. Papeete on the northwest coast is the capital and administrative center of French Polynesia. Copra, sugar cane, vanilla and coffee are exported. Tourism is an important industry. Capt. Samuel Wallis of the British Navy discovered the following year and claimed it for France. Subsequent English visits were by James Cook in 1769 and William Bligh in HMS "Bounty" in 1788. Members of the Protestant London Missionary Society established the first European settlement in 1797, and tith the aid of the local Pomare family gained control of the entire island and established a "missionary kingdom" with a scriptural code of law. Nevertheless, Tahiti was subsequently declared a French protectorate (1842) and a colony (1880), and since 1958 is part of the overseas territory of Fench Polynesia.
