The Kingdom of Tonga (or Friendly Islands), a member of the British Commonwealth, is an archipelago situated in the southern Pacific Ocean south of Western Samoa and east of Fiji comprising 150 islands. Tonga has an area of 748 sq. km. and a population of 119,000. Capital: Nuku’alofa. Primarily agricultural, the kingdom exports bananas and copra. Tonga - unique among Pacific nations - never completely lost its indigenous governance. The archipelagos of “The Friendly Islands” were united into a Polynesian kingdom in 1845. Tonga became a constitutional monarchy in 1875 and a British protectorate in 1900; it withdrew from the protectorate and joinedthe Commonwealth of Nations in 1970. Tonga remains the only monarchy in the Pacific.
