| The United Republica of Tanzania, located on the east coast of Africa between Kenia and Mozambique, consists of Tanganyika and the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. It has an area of 945,090 sq. km. and a population of 40.21 million. Capital: Dodoma. The chief exports are cotton, coffee, diamonds, sisal, cloves, petroleum products and cashew nuts. Shortly after achieving independence from Britain in the early 1960s, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Znazibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observes` clams of voting irregularities.
