The Republic of Surinam, formerly known as Dutch Guiana, located on the north central coast of South America between Guyana and French Guiana, has an area of 163,270 sq. km. and a population of476,000 Capital: Paramiribo. The country is rich in minerals and forests, and self-sufficient in rice, the staple food crop. The mining, processing and exporting of bauxite is the principal economic activity. First explored by the Spaniards in the 16th century and then settled by the English in the mid-17th century, Suriname decame a Dutch colony in 1667. With the abilition of slavery in 1863, workers were broght in from India and Java. Independence from the Netherlands was granted in 1975. Five years later the civilian government was replaced by a military regime that soon declared a socialist republic. It continued to exert contrl through a succession of nominally civilian adimintrations until 1987, when international pressure finaly force a democratic election. In 1990. the military overthrew the civilian leadership, but a democratically elected government - a fourparty New Front coalition - returned to power in 1991 and has ruled since; the coalition expanded to eight parties in 2005. (163,270 sq. km.) and a population of 550,000 as of 2016. Capital: Paramaribo. The country is rich in minerals and forests, and self-sufficient in rice, the staple food crop. The mining, processing and exporting of bauxite is the principal economic activity. Lieutenants of Amerigo Vespucci sighted the Guiana coast in 1499. Spanish explorers of the 16th century, disappointed at finding no gold, departed leaving the area to be settled by the British in 1652. The colony prospered and the Netherlands acquired it in 1667 in exchange for the Dutch rights in Nieuw Nederland (state of New York). During the European wars of the 18th and 19th centuries, which were fought in part in the new world, Suriname was occupied by the British from 1781-1784 and 1796-1814.Suriname became an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Dec. 15, 1954. Full independence was achieved on Nov. 25, 1975. In 1980, a coup installed a military government, which has since been dissolved.
