The Netherlands Antilles, part of the Netherlands realm, comprise two groups of islands in the West Indies: Bonaire and Curaço near the Venezuelan coast; St. Eustatius, Saba, and the southern part of St. Maarten (St. Martin) southeast of Puerto Rico. The island group has an area of 385 sq. mi. (961 sq. km.) and a population of 210,000. Capital: Willemstad. Chief industries are the refining of crude oil, and rourism. Petroleum products and phosphates are exported. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curaçao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the earl 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of St. Martin is shared whth France; its southern portion is named Saint Maarten and is part of the Netherlands Antilles; its northern portion, called Saint Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France.On Dec. 15, 1954, the Netherlands Antilles were given complete domestic autonomy and granted equality within the Kingdom with Surinam and the Netherlands. The island of Aruba gained independence in 1986. In October 2010 Curaçao and Saint Marten became autonomous entities of the Netherlands with the guilder being a valid currency until 31.12.2011. The islands of Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius became direct dependencies of the Netherlands and will usethe US dollar starting 1.1.2011.
