Descrição Cédula
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania, located in northwest Africa bounded by Spanish Sahara, Mali, Algeria, Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean, has an area of 397,955 sq. mi. (1,030,700 sq. km.) and a population of 2.58 million. Capital: Nouakchott. The economy centers on herding, agruculture, fishing and mining. Iron ore, copper concentrates and fish produts are exported. Independent from France in 1960, Mauritania annexed the southern third of the former Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara) in 1976, but relinquished it after three years of raids by the Polisario guerrilla front seeking independence for the territory. Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya seized power in a coup in 1984 and ruled Mauritania with a heavy hand for over two decades. A series of presidential elections that he held were widely seen as flawed. A bloodless coup in August 2005 deposed President TAYA and ushered in a military council that oversaw a transition to democratic rule. Independent candidate Sidi Ould Cheikh Abadallahi was inaugurated in April 2007 as Mauritania's first freely and fairly elected president. Hi term ended prematurely in August 2008 when a military junta deposed him and ushered in a military council government. Meanwhile, the country continues to experience ethnic tensions among its black population (Afro-Mauritanians) and White and Black Moor (Arab-Berber) communities. On June 28, 1973, in a move designed to emphasize its non-alignment with France, Mauritania converted its currency from the old French-supported CFA franc unit to a new unit called the Ouguiya. MONETARY SYSTEM: 1 Ouguiya = 5 Khoum 100 Ouguiya = 500 CFA Francs, 1973- Note: Issues specially marked with letter E for Mauritania were issued by the Banque Centrale des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest. These issues were used before Mauritania seceded from the French Community of the West African States in 1973. For those listings see West African States.
