Ceylon (later to become The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka) is an island situated in the Indian Ocean 18 miles (29 km.) southeast of India. It has an area of 65,610 sq. km. and a population of 21.13 million. Capital: Colombo. The economy is chiefly agricultural. Tea, rubber and coconut products are exported. The earliest known inhabitants are the Veddahs. The first Sinhala arrived in Lanka late in the 5th century BCE, probably from northern India. The coastal areas of the island were controlled by China for 30 years from 1408, the Portuguese from 1505 and the Dutch from 1658. The island was ceded to the British in 1796, became a crown colony in 1802, and the independent Kingdom of Kandy in the central part of the island was united under British rule by 1815, as Ceylon. Constitutional changes in 1931 granted Ceylon a parliamentary form of government. It became independent in 1948. Its name in English was changed to Sri Lanka on 1972 May 22 with the adoption of a Republican constitution. For later issues, see Sri Lanka.
